Metagenomic analyses of the gut microbiota associated with colorectal adenoma.

COMMENT: By means of sequencing analysis of the V3-V4 region of the 16S gene from colonoscopy aspirates the authors analize the gut microbiome diversity and disbiosis in patients with colorectal adenoma (CRA) or intramucosal colorectal carcinoma (CRC) and compare it with the microbiome of healthy subjects.
The study reveals a higher frequency of Fusobacterium varium in patients with CRA or intramucosal CRC compared to the healthy subjects. This suggests this organism migth be involved in the pathogenesis of CRA or intramucosal CRC
The present study has demonstrated for the first time that F. varium may be associated with the development of CRA as well as intramucosal CRC, as analyzed by a metagenomic approach using next-generation sequencing (NGS).
