Bacterial Diversity and Community Structure of Supragingival Plaques in Adults with Dental Health or Caries Revealed by 16S Pyrosequencing.

COMMENT: The authors analyze microbiome composition of dental plaque in health and caries disease by means of 454 technology sequencing 16S rRNA.They find a core plaque microbiome which is more diverse in health than in the caries samples, increasing the low diversity as the caries is worse.
The dominant phyla of the plaque microbiota included Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, and TM7. The dominant genera included Capnocytophaga, Prevotella, Actinomyces, Corynebacterium, Neisseria, Streptococcus, Rothia, and Leptotrichia, In addition they identified a list of caries-related and health-related bacteria although their role should be be further investigated.
